If you have asthma with frequent wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, Salmeterol + Fluticasone helps prevent these symptoms. Salmeterol + Fluticasone is a combination inhaler. It contains salmeterol, a long-acting bronchodilator, and fluticasone, a corticosteroid.
Together, these ingredients work to keep airways open and reduce inflammation. This helps you breathe more easily on a daily basis.
It is used regularly as maintenance therapy for asthma. It is also used for some people with COPD to reduce symptoms and flare-ups.
This medicine is not a rescue inhaler. Do not use it to treat sudden wheeze or trouble breathing. If you have a flare-up, use your fast-acting inhaler as prescribed and seek help if needed.
Do not use Salmeterol + Fluticasone if you are allergic to salmeterol, fluticasone, or any ingredient in the inhaler.
In asthma, this is not a stand-alone treatment. It should be used with other medicines as prescribed. It is not for stopping an attack.
Tell your doctor if you have a current infection of the airways, such as active TB, or a systemic fungal infection.
Some versions contain lactose. If you have a severe milk protein allergy, check with your clinician.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss risks and benefits with your doctor.
Children may need different dosing. Your doctor will decide what is right for them.
Tell your doctor about heart problems, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, diabetes, thyroid disease, seizures, or glaucoma before starting.
Rinse your mouth after each use and keep the spacer clean to reduce mouth thrush. If you notice swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, seek urgent medical help.
Very common: mouth or throat irritation, hoarseness, cough, and thrush in the mouth.
Common: headache, sore throat, runny nose, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, and mild muscle or joint pain. Palpitations or a faster heart rate may occur in some people.
Uncommon: tremor, dizziness, and mild blurred vision. Some people may feel anxious or have increased blood pressure.
Rare: rash, swelling of the lips or face, or allergic reactions such as wheezing or trouble breathing. If you have any of these, contact a clinician promptly.
Not known: with long-term inhaled steroid use, growth in children may be affected, and there may be changes in vision or bones over time. These effects are monitored by your doctor.
Tell your doctor about all medicines you use, including over‑the‑counter drugs and herbal products.
Non‑selective beta‑blockers (for example propranolol) can reduce the effect of Salmeterol.
Medicines that raise fluticasone levels in the body (such as ketoconazole, itraconazole, or ritonavir) can increase the chance of side effects. Your doctor may adjust the dose if needed.
Macrolide antibiotics (for example erythromycin) and other drugs that affect the heart rate may interact. Avoid combinations unless your clinician approves.
Also avoid using other inhaled bronchodilators in excess without medical guidance, as this can increase side effects like fast heart rate or shaking.
