Could ciprofloxacin help with my infection? Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic. It fights bacteria. It does not treat viruses. A healthcare professional will tell you if this medicine is right for you.
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic in the fluoroquinolone family. It kills bacteria or stops them from growing.
This medicine treats certain bacterial infections. It is often used for urine infections, lung infections, and infections of the stomach, intestines, skin, or joints.
It is not effective against viruses. Doctors decide when ciprofloxacin is the best choice for you.
Take ciprofloxacin exactly as prescribed. Doses are usually every 12 hours and the length depends on the infection. Take with a full glass of water. You can take it with food. Do not take calcium, magnesium, iron, or zinc within 2 hours of a dose. If you take an antacid, separate it by at least 2 hours. If you are using the liquid form, shake well and measure carefully. Store at room temperature, away from heat and moisture, and keep it out of reach of children.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double dose. Finish the full course even if you feel better. For storage, keep the bottle closed and protect it from moisture.
Most people tolerate ciprofloxacin well. Common side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, or headache. You might feel dizzy or have trouble sleeping. Sun exposure can raise your risk of sunburn. If these effects bother you, tell your doctor.
Tell your doctor if you notice tendon pain or swelling, especially in the ankle, knee, or shoulder. Rare nerve problems can cause tingling, pain, or weakness. Seek immediate care for severe allergic reactions or chest pain, fainting, or trouble breathing.
Call your doctor right away if you have a severe rash, swelling of your face or tongue, or trouble breathing.
Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, nursing, or have kidney or liver problems, or a history of tendon or nerve issues. Bring up all medicines you take, including vitamins and minerals, so your clinician can check for interactions.
