Rifaximin is a gut-active rifamycin antibiotic. It binds bacterial RNA polymerase in the intestine, limiting RNA synthesis with minimal absorption into the bloodstream, and is used to treat traveler's diarrhea caused by noninvasive E. coli, to reduce recurrent hepatic encephalopathy in cirrhosis, and to relieve symptoms of IBS-D in adults.
Rifaximin is an antibiotic that acts mainly in the gut. It stays where it is given, producing fewer systemic effects than many drugs that travel through the bloodstream.
Common uses include traveler's diarrhea due to noninvasive E. coli, prevention of recurrent hepatic encephalopathy in people with liver disease, and relief of IBS-D symptoms in adults. It is not designed for general, systemic infections.
Follow the prescription exactly. Dosing varies by condition; read the label or ask your clinician. Rifaximin can be taken with or without food, as directed.
Take each dose at the times prescribed. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose; do not double up. Do not stop the medicine early unless your clinician says so, even if you feel better. Store at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep in the original packaging and out of reach of children. If the medicine looks unusual or you smell off, discard it and ask your pharmacist about replacement. Do not share your medicine with others and do not reuse someone elseβs dose.
Common side effects include mild stomach upset, gas, nausea, or headache. Some people may feel dizziness or fatigue. A skin rash or itching can occur but is rare. Antibiotics can cause diarrhea that may be a sign of a more serious infection; seek care if you have severe or persistent diarrhea, fever, dehydration, or blood in the stool. Severe allergic reactions are uncommon but require urgent medical help.
Pregnant or breastfeeding people should discuss rifaximin with a clinician before use. Tell your doctor about all medicines you take, especially other antibiotics. If symptoms persist or worsen after starting treatment, or you notice signs of liver problems (jaundice, dark urine, changed stools), contact a clinician. Seek medical advice promptly for high fever, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or signs of an allergic reaction.
